One of the Venetian neighborhoods, Burano Island, is famous for its motley houses and unique lace, which is called merletto in Italian. According to legend, a girl decided to replicate the pattern of the seaweed that her beloved had found in the water while fishing. This was how she made lace. A school of lacemaking was opened on the island in the 16th century. Venetian lace was valued in Europe as highly as gold and decorated the clothing of royal dignitaries.
