Since the 14th century, the first thing that caught the eye of travelers arriving in Venice by sea was a unique edifice, the residence of the rulers of the Venetian Republic, the Doge’s Palace. Leaving the room of the Great Council and entering the balcony overlooking the lagoon, a doge would personally greet the guests. The exquisiteness of the Gothic arched gallery, chiseled colonnades and tracery in the balconies made the palace one of the landmarks of this city.
