For the first time the city of Windsor is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle. Its name comes from the old English title Windles-ore, or «crooked river shore». There is Windsor Castle, the residence of the British Kings, showing an unshakable symbol of the monarchy, towering over 900 years exactly on this shore, perched on a hill in the valley of the River Thames. Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family spend at Windsor Castle most of their free time even nowadays. The luxurious interiors are decorated with outstanding paintings and works of art from the Royal Collection.
